Note: The next roundtable will take place on 04.07.23 (18:00 to 20:30) on the topic "Hands-on Session: Continuous vs. Spot-Check Monitoring on the General Ward". If you are interested, please register here - we look forward to seeing you!
At the fourth roundtable of the year (May 30, 2023), PD Dr. med. Akira-Sebastian Poncette delivered the introductory keynote on "Monitoring in the Hospital of the Future." In both the keynote and the ensuing discussion, the implementation of novel monitoring technologies away from the ICU formed a particular focus.
Key take-home messages:
- The rate of undetected postoperative complications is still too high - for example, 90% of all postoperative hypoxemia is not detected (Sun et al., 2015).
- The use of (continuous) monitoring solutions creates improved postoperative outcome, but clear indications for general wards are missing.
- Non-technical issues (e.g., institutional factors, competencies, workflow, and responsibilities) complicate implementation of monitoring technologies rather than technical issues.
- Mindset shift is necessary - Early involvement of nursing, consideration of studies (especially RCTs), and application of implementation guidelines are therefore essential.
We thank all participants for their engagement and look forward to welcoming you again soon!
