Expertise

Dr Katarina Braune is a board-certified pediatrician and diabetologist with expertise in digital health, interdisciplinary and patient-centric care, and long-standing experience in consulting and patient advocacy. 

She attended medical school in Halle (Saale), Barcelona, Johannesburg and London and completed her residency in Pediatrics at Charité as well as in refugee and migrant health at “Charité hilft”. As a postdoctoral researcher, she worked with the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Charité, the Steno Diabetes Center in Copenhagen and at the Diabetes Research Center of Stanford University. 

Katarina Braune is fellow and co-chair of the BIH Charité Digital Clinician Scientist program, part of the Female Science Talents Intensive Track of the Falling Walls foundation and co-founded the EU Horizon 2020-funded research project “OPEN”. The patient-led OPEN project is creating evidence on the online movement and peer-support community of people with diabetes called #WeAreNotWaiting, and the open-source innovations emerging from it.  

As co-lead of the working group Digital Transformation & Applications, she contributes to Charité’s mission in “rethinking health” to identify unmet needs of patients, their caregivers, and providers, and change healthcare through interdisciplinary collaboration, digital technology, and a holistic, person-centered approach to health and well-being.
