Educational Programs on the Topic of AI in Medicine

Assessment and comparison of the current state of and demand for teaching programs on the topic of artificial intelligence in medicine and identification of gaps in demand and implementation hurdles in education and training, along with solution strategies. In the course of this, AI core competencies for physicians were compiled and recommendations for their implementation were formulated.

Motivation

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine holds great potential for diagnostic and therapeutic efficiency in all stages of patient care. Given the increasing application and implementation of AI in medicine, the development of AI competencies for medical professionals is essential. For the project "KI-Campus – Die Lernplattform für Künstliche Intelligenz", funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), we are collaborating with the Dieter Scheffner Center for Medical University Teaching and Evidence-Based Education Research at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Initiative for Collaboration and Innovation in Healthcare e.V. to conduct a study on educational programs on AI topics in medicine.

Innovations and perspectives

An inventory of learning opportunities on the topic of AI for physicians, supplemented by a needs analysis of the required digital competencies, has not yet been carried out throughout Germany. It can reveal important implications for the implementation of AI content in medical education and training and will provide a starting point for further research projects in this field.
